:: JARMO SAARI TALKS ABOUT "NEXT OF KIN" ::
"Choreographer Tero Saarinen asked me to compose the music for his new
creation, Next of Kin, in 2006. The musical aesthetic and the details were
created simultaneously, in interaction with the choreography, over a long,
fruitful period of more than two years.

Next of Kin is a hallucinatory journey into the collective unconscious and a
quest to discover the roots of our fears. Many of the work's surrealistic artistic
influences, such as experimental and expressionist horror films, have also
affected the music.

During the creative process I let my imagination run free and recorded countless
sounds and motifs in my home studio, expanding my sound library. For instance,
I sampled most of my kitchen and bathroom equipment, just in case! I also sought
out themes, modes and rhythms that avoid obvious epochs and genres. Water
sounds, pedal steel guitar, razors, toys, a typewriter, a beaten-up piano,
melodica, dishes, voice, barrel organs and scrap added their own distinctive
aroma to my obscure sinfonietta.

After years of experimenting with processing, layering and editing sampled
electric-guitar textures, both live and in the studio, in Next of Kin I needed
to take my ideas to a new level. My background as a multi-instrumentalist
allowed me to augment the unusual sonic palette with viola da gamba, glass harp,
theremin and trombone, plus kalimba and lap steel guitar. These instruments
became essential to and characteristic of the piece, along with the guitar
drones and interference.

I have tried to achieve intimate chamber-music-like nuances, epic sound textures,
an orchestral wall-of-sound, tribal intensity, and industrial outbursts, all in odd,
unique flavours ideal for the dreamlike settings. I was challenged to maximize
the range of methods available to a 21st-century one-man-band in order to create
what I would call a cinematic sequence or an absurd cornucopia. Or perhaps it is
a post-modern ballet score...

:: Jarmo Saari SOLU: The making of "LOVE" (RockAdillo Records 2007) in Finnish ::
Tunne on järkeä vahvempi.
